The main building constructed of local stone in the 1860´s was home to a prominent business family. In 1939 it was converted to a small hotel known as the Springfield Hotel. Post war additions were made, and in the early 1970´s the hotel acquired its present name The Baltasound Hotel.

The cottage at the rear of the hotel became a public bar and was enjoyed by locals and serving R.A.F personnel alike. The oil boom provided prosperity for the hotel and initiated the construction of the wood cabins in the grounds in the 1990´s.

Today the oil and military presence has all but disappeared. In their place comes aqua culture - salmon and mussels, and the steady growth of tourism. The hotel has a European wide attraction and several languages can be heard in the restaurant peak season. A number of small tour operators have links with us - specializing in wildlife, photography, geology and exploring the Shetlands, they find the hotel an excellent base for their activities.

Visitors come here for many reasons. In no order of importance: bird watching, photography, a visit to Muckle Flugga, Hermaness national nature reserve, geology, puffins and sea otters; and peace and tranquility. Tracing ancestry is of interest to some of our guests and most enjoy a good walk. Hot temperatures in Europe have even changed perceptions of the Shetland climate!
